(Pittsburgh--January 29, 2003) On February 13, Mayor Tom Murphy, Library trustees and staff, community members and public officials will trade the hardcovers for hard hats and shovels to mark the official start of Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's Capital Improvement Program. A Construction Kickoff is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Homewood library, 7101 Hamilton Avenue.

Library administrators and branch staff and the Homewood community met with space programmers and architects throughout the planning process to generate ideas, identify needs, and review and discuss the designs. Renovation highlights include the addition of a passenger elevator, upgrades to public meeting rooms, restoration of the building's original windows and skylight, and new accessible restrooms. Photos and construction news will be posted to the Library's website.

While the Homewood library is being renovated, it will temporarily close to the public beginning at 5 p.m., on Saturday, February 1, 2003. The construction is expected to take up to eight months. In the interim, Homewood library customers are being welcomed by all other Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh locations including the East Liberty, Hill District, Squirrel Hill and Main Library locations, as well as, other county libraries in Wilkinsburg and Penn Hills. During the renovation, the Librarians will be bringing library service to neighborhood schools, community groups and senior centers in the Homewood service area. To schedule a library program or book discussion, please call 412-731-3080.

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh-Homewood is the first library to be completely renovated, followed shortly by improvements to the Brookline, Squirrel Hill and Woods Run locations. Also in 2003, Main Library's services and collections will be reorganized to better meet the 21st Century customer's needs.

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh - Homewood is among the first of CLP's neighborhood branches to benefit from improvements and renovations in the system-wide Capital Improvement Program. The improvements and renovations will enable CLP to provide modern, state-of-the art library services to all of its customers. Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh - Homewood serves the communities of Homewood-Brushton, Point Breeze, Penn Hills, East Hills, and parts of East Liberty. Andrew Carnegie considered this his "home" branch.

Editor's Note:

The construction budget for Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh - Homewood is $2, 546, 000.

The first locations chosen for renovation using the funds from proceeds of a bond issue are those with the highest percentage of use by Allegheny County residents who live outside of the City of Pittsburgh. This decision was made since support for the bond issue, including the reallocation of $1 million of current operating fund allocated by the Allegheny Regional Asset District, which is committed to providing service to all county residents.
