Fundraising Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards

Tuesday, November 17, 2009
9:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Well meaning people are often enlisted onto nonprofit boards without ever being told what their responsibilities are. They either learn from experience, or they never learn. In an effort to create stronger, more effective nonprofit boards, this session will highlight fundraising as one of the most fundamental duties of every board member. Without the committed support of board members, an organization cannot promise consistent programming or successfully carry out their mission.

In addition to basic fundraising responsibilities, discussion will include how to recruit and motivate board members, as well as how to evaluate fundraising performance.

The speaker will be Dee Jay Oshry, CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive). Mr. Oshry brings 31 years of experience in the management of capital campaigns, major gift fundraising, leadership development, and management of a development office to his role as fundraising consultant. Both nationally and locally, he is a respected strategist, teacher, motivator, and facilitator. Mr. Oshry has spearheaded massive fundraising programs for such organizations as The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, the University of Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh. He has also worked extensively with Boards of Trustees of nonprofit organizations and is a regular faculty member of the Nonprofit Leadership Institute at Duquesne University, teaching the lead course of “What Boards Should Know About Fundraising.” Mr. Oshry was honored as Outstanding Fund Raising Executive by the Association of Fund Raising Professionals and received the CNG (now Dominion) Volunteer in the Arts (VITA) Award.

The fee to attend this program is $20 per person, and registration is required. Please call the Foundation Center at 412-281-7143 to reserve your space.
