Gardening Thyme

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh - Main Seed Library

The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh - Main Seed Library, formerly the Pittsburgh Seed and Story Library, aims to provide a public seed bank, gardening and seed saving classes, and a place to hear and share some of Pittsburgh's vibrant gardening history.

Location

Located on the First Floor of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh - Main at 4400 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh PA 15213.

Hours

Access the Seed Library when the library is open: Monday-Thursday 10am-8pm, Friday and Saturday 10am-5:30pm, Sunday 12pm-5pm

Checking Out Seeds

Instead of checking out books, check out seeds. Take what you need (3-4 seeds per desired plant.) Envelopes and labels are provided. Fill out a member form available near the seed library when you check out seeds.

Returning Seeds

Bring some of your saved seeds back to the seed library to share with others. Learn how to save seeds from the plants that you grow using our seed library zine and books in our collection. You may donate seeds that you've saved (please label them) or commercially grown seeds. Please do not share hybrid or GMO seeds. Fill out a member form available near the seed library when you donate seeds.

Types of Seeds

Open-pollinated or heirloom varieties have been grown for so many generations that their physical and genetic qualities are relatively stable. This seed will be "true to type" if saved. In simple terms, you will reap what you sow.

Hybrid seeds. If a packet has hybrid, F1, or VF written on it, seeds from those plants will not produce plants like the parent plant. They may produce something somewhat or very different, or they may produce nothing at all.
