North Side: Gleaming Aluminum and Glass

Says Roy Lubove, "author of 20th Century Pittsburgh and professor [at the University] of Pittsburgh's School of Social Work" (38),

The feeling was that if the city was to remake itself, it had to destroy the old Pittsburgh to build the new. The gleaming aluminum and glass buildings were the symbol of the new Pittsburgh. No one saw any value in the old homes and public buildings of the North Side. The markethouse, the post office, they were all expendable. (39)
