"Getting Around the Burgh"

2000: 4th Annual Photography Contest Winners

Scanned drawing of a proto-rollerblader.

This Spring, the Pennsylvania Department was proud to sponsor its 4th annual photography contest open to all high school students in Allegheny County. The theme of the contest was "Getting Around the Burgh: Your Favorite Mode of Transportation." The Pennsylvania Department is home to the Pittsburgh Photographic Library (PPL), a premiere collection of historic images of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania, representing the work of such noted photographers as Esther Bubley, Clyde Hare, Luke Swank and Frank Bingaman. All contest submissions are now a part of this collection.

Photographs were judged by Heather Brodhead, Bob Ruschak and Bill Wade. Prizes awarded, courtesy of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, were: 1st, $250; 2nd, $100; 3rd, $50; Honorable Mention, $25. Each student entering received a certificate of achievement from Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. For a month the work of the winners and all contestants was exhibited in the display cases (first and second floors) of the Main Branch of Carnegie Library in Oakland.
